DAY 6 - Pray for Your Parents
Bishop Keith A. Butler
SENIOR PASTOR and PRESIDING BISHOP
WORD OF FAITH SOUTHFIELD, MI
Praise God. It is wonderful to be a young person. And you know, when you have parents, sometimes parents don’t get it right. Sometimes parents go the wrong way. Sometimes it is good and sometimes it is bad. Sometimes they listen. Sometimes they don’t. And of course, you are in a constant state of development yourself so there is much that you need to learn, in Jesus’ name. But you know, there is something that you can do for your parents regardless to what their background might be. Like I said, you might not have but one or your home may be broken or who knows what you are dealing with because these are tough times today. Let me tell you - as a believer, as a young Christian, what God tells you to do to help them and to help you. Let’s read it from the Word of God. Ephesians chapter 6, verse 2 says, “Honour thy father and mother;” Well, you may say, “Why give them honor because of?” The Word doesn’t say give them honor because they are good or bad. It said to honor them because that is God’s order.
God has always wanted those who come before you to receive honor and those coming behind you also that they will honor you as you get older. But it tells you when you honor them - note the very next part of this verse. “That it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long on the earth.” If for no other reason, you want to honor them particularly through prayer. You see, prayer changes things. Prayer sets the atmosphere. Prayer allows the Holy Spirit to begin to move on the hearts of people. Prayer makes all the difference. You see, God moves in the earth because someone prayed and asked Him to do it. He will hear your prayer and He will move up in the hearts of your parents and begin to help them to understand.
You see, you didn’t come with a rulebook. You didn’t come with an explanation manual. Everyone is different and parents - they have to learn how to operate with you and you also need to learn how to operate with them. But when you pray, the Holy Spirit will grease it and make it easier so that both of you can walk in the realm of the Spirit and have what God wants for you - success in all of your life, in the name of Jesus.
