DAY 17 - Pray Against Bullying

Minister Keith Fritz

Hello. My name is Keith Fritz, youth minister at Word of Faith, Toronto, Canada. Thank you for joining us for 30 days of prayer. Today we are going to pray against bullying. Bullying is wrong. It is behavior that makes a person bullied feel afraid or uncomfortable. There are many ways that young people bully each other, even if they don’t realize that at the time. Some of these include punching, shoving or other acts that hurt people physically, spreading bad rumors about people, keeping certain people out of a group or a team, teasing people in a mean way, getting certain people to gang up on others. Ephesians chapter 4, 31-32 says, “Get rid of all bitterness, rage, anger, harsh words and slander, as well as all types of evil behavior. Instead, be kind to each other, tenderhearted forgiving one another, just as God, through Christ, has forgiven you.” Bullies can make life really tough, especially when you are at school and you have to deal with them every day. Lots of times when you are dealing with bullies, it can become hard to know what to do. First of all, let your teachers and your parents know. You might think the right thing to do would be to do something mean back or teach them a lesson. Here is what Jesus says in Matthew 5:43-44, “You are familiar with the old written Law, love your friend and its unwritten companion. Hate your enemy.” I am challenging that. I’m telling you to love your enemies. Let them bring out the best in you – not the worst. When someone gives you a hard time, respond with the energies of prayer. That’s the message translation. We might feel like the right thing to do is to get even, to teach the bully lesson. The Bible states that we are to do the exact opposite. We have to respond by praying for them. We have to respond by doing all we can to help them. It’s not an easy thing but begin by praying for those who are mean to you. Start to ask God for ways to share His love with them. God may use you to lead them to Christ. You want to be used by God. Pray for those who are mean to you. Be blessed.
